Churches of Guimarães Tour - 1 Day

We suggest this interesting walking tour to discover the churches located in the historic city centre of Guimarães, World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Route

  • Meeting point near the statue of D. Afonso Henriques, in front of the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança;
  • Reception of the participants;
  • Beginning of the tour with the visit to the church of the former Convent of St. Anthony of the Capuchins, which now belongs to Santa Casa de Misericórdia of Guimarães, and also where used to be settled the Hospital of Guimarães (entrance fee - 2€ - not included);
  • The following church is the one of St. Damasus, near the Castle of Guimarães, place where was rebuilt in the context of a urban restructuring in the city;
  • Going down the hill, you will find the Holy Cross Chapel;
  • The, you will find the Church of St. Michael, where, according to tradition, our first king D. Afonso Henriques was baptised;
  • Next stop will be at the Carmelites Church, which is now part of the St. Stephanie Home for children; right there, you will also find a chapel that refers to the passion of Jesus (there is a set of 5 chapels like this one in the city);
  • Going down Santa Maria Street, you will reach the St. Claire Convent which is now the City Hall;
  • Then you will visit the church devoted to the patron saint of the city, Our Lady of the Olive tree, where the pilgrims of Santiago used to stop;
  • The next one will be the Church of Our Lady of the Consolation and the Holy Steps;
  • You will go then to the Church of St. Francis, belonging now to the Venerable Third Order of St. Francis, famous for its luxurious baroque inside decoration;
  • Afterwards, you may go to the church  of the former convent of the Dominican nuns, nowadays the parish church of St. Sebastian;
  • Nearby you can admire the St. Dominic’s church;
  • Arriving at the Square of Toural, have a look at St. Peter’s Church;
  • Finally, you will end the tour with the Misericordia Church, near the contemporary statue of D. Afonso Henriques.

 Remarks:

  • Tour organised for a Full Day visit (approximately 6 hours); it can be adapted to a half day tour;
  • Children till the age of 12 won’t pay, as long as accompanied by adults;
  • Transport not included; it’s a walking tour;
  • Lunch not included, but it can be organised (12.50 eur per person);
  • Access to the churches subject to the opening schedules and to religious celebrations or other events that may occur.
